Taking its visual cues from the recent movie reboots (it follows the Kelvin Timeline), you get to collect and upgrade the likes of Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty, Sulu, Uhura etc, equipping them to power up your ships, of which you can have up to three in operation at any point. Whether or not you’re into Star Trek (as it happens, I’m not), it’s this RPG component that provides Fleet Command with one of its most engaging features. Instead, Fleet Command takes the heavy metagame of such titles, which sees you waiting while you level up buildings and complete research, and combines it with a more accessible and flexible mission-based progression system, and a strong role-playing element. It’s not one of those hardcore, over-monetised 4X games such as Game of War or Kings of Avalon.įor one thing, the game’s monetisation is very different from other 4X games in the sense that its store is based around resource bundles priced at $5 rather than the usual up to $99.99 hard currency offerings of other F2P mobile games. A new universeĪs broadly described, Fleet Command is a 4X mobile strategy game. Sure, the game can’t boast same level of popular appeal but in terms of design, engagement and monetisation, it’s doing some pretty interesting things. That situation may be about to change however with the release of Scopely’s Star Trek: Fleet Command. While EA’s Galaxy of Heroes continues high in the top grossing charts, the only Star Trek game of note - Disruptor Beam’s Timelines - struggles to break into the top 200. It’s a situation reflected in the number of Star Wars mobile games released over the years, and their success. Abrams, Star Trek permanently seems to be flying in the shadow of another, somewhat larger, US sci-fi brand. Star Trek was reviewed with version 1.0.Despite the best efforts of J.J. They don't interfere with gameplay too much, though. These boxes are pretty large and occupy a lot of screen space. appear on-screen with a small dialog box altering you of incoming enemies or problems aboard the ship. Very often, you see portraits of the crew - Kirk, Spock, Scotty, etc. The space backdrops are colorful but a touch gauzy. Star Trek features a model of the revitalized Enterprise from the new movie and all of the enemy ships look like their television/movie counterparts.

This game feels like a basic shooter with the Star Trek license laid on top of it - your basic summer movie videogame cash-in. Because of these two factors, I spent most of the game just sweeping from side to side. The pace of the game is slow and though the touch controls are the superior of the three options, they are not nearly as precise as you need from a shooter. My beef with Star Trek - aside from how silly it is to see the Enterprise race through the battlefield while hammering dozens of enemy ships (that's something the Falcon would do) - is that it's just not much of a pulse-raiser. It lets you concentrate on the matter of blasting everything in sight with standard fire or superweapons. The tractor beam mechanic is actually pretty cool. Your ship auto-fires a constant stream of photo torpedoes and automatically blasts nearby ships with phasers, but you can tap power-ups and prisoners to pull them in via a tractor beam. Of the three, I recommend the touch mode, where you drag your finger around the screen to direct the Enterprise. There are three ways to control the Enterprise as it zooms through the cosmos: touch, tilt, or via a virtual stick. I noticed a marked improvement in the tractor beam every time I upgraded it, for example. Stars are cashed in between missions to upgrade the Enterprise's photon torpedoes, phasers, tractor beam, and hull. The more of these directives you satisfy, the more stars you earn. The secondary and tertiary directives are more refined, such as destroy every single enemy or collect a certain number of pick-ups via your tractor beam.
The primary directive is usually just to survive and complete the level. However, each stage has three sets of directives. There are several missions to undertake across the galaxy - all of them involving shooting the hell out of alien vessels. Star Trek for the iPhone is a well-meaning shooter that just never quite gets off the ground thanks to its slower pacing, less-than-spectacular control, and the ridiculous premise of the Enterprise as some incredible war machine that always finds itself in stand-offs with 38 Klingon Birds of Prey.
